Hotel damaged after sprinkler activated

A man has been charged after allegedly activating a fire sprinkler in a Sydney hotel over the weekend resulting in thousands of dollars in damage.

Just before 10pm on Saturday 22 August 2020, it is alleged a man entered the male toilets in the Argyle Street hotel and tampered with the sprinkler head on the ceiling, causing the water system and audible alarm to be activated.

A large amount of water was released from sprinklers into the restaurant area of the hotel causing damage in excess of $40,000.

Hotel patrons were forced to evacuate, and the hotel was forced to close while repairs were completed.

Sydney City Police Area Command attended, and an investigation commenced.

About 9am today (Monday 24 August 2020), a 20-year-old man was arrested and taken to Narellan Police Station.

He was charged with malicious damage and granted conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 23 September 2020.
